I have recently been diagnosed with stage three lung cancer and I’m so relieved to know I have the option to say goodbye early if need be. My son lives in Oregon and will help if needed. He is a minister who believes God does not want us to suffer. The courage and grace in this video overwhelmed me. Thank you for sharing these bittersweet moments.

To say that God will ease your suffering and reward you after death for your suffering , and that God expects us to “fight on when there is no hope” is like saying that Allah will provide 72 virgins in Paradise if you strap a bomb on yourself and detonate it in a crowd of “unbelievers”. I commend rational religious beliefs, and am terrified of irrationals. And it is irrational to assume that another person has a “right” (in the name of religion or societal paternalism) to define my personal life-sustaining or life-ending decisions — that is a decision that is mine alone to make, in harmony with MY spirtual beliefs. Death is not tragic, it is normal and happens to EVERY ONE of us, if not by cancer then by dementia or renal failure or heart attack or an endless list. Sometimes it seems to happen “too soon” but that does not justify forcing someone to endure needless suffering merely because someone else is offended by the fact that death is inevitable. As a physician for almost a half century, I have evolved three rules: 1. do everything possible to relieve pain and suffering, 2. do everything I can to prolong the patient’s life, and 3. NEVER let #2. interfere with #1. My patients are fully informed, and make all final decisions — sometimes forcing me to break rule #3.

    Mr. Richardson:

Compassion & Choices needs to promote Dr. Katherine Morris as one of the plaintiffs in a potentially groundbreaking case we are bringing in New Mexico asserting that New Mexico law allows aid in dying (www.compassionandchoices.org/what-we-do/in-the-courts/morris-v-new-mexico/), so is there any way to get clips of just the parts of this documentary featuring Dr. Katherine Morris?

Thanks in advance for your consideration.
