  • A true classic: Hitchcock knew well and exploited the horror that lies in what is unseen but merely suggested at: the shower scene lacks all real violence except in the rapid-fire jump-cut editing, screeching violins, and Janet Leigh’s ear-popping shrieks. In black and white, even the psuedo-blood isn’t red…but the audience get’s the picture, literally. And there’s even sorrow involved in the last shot of Leigh laying half in and out of the tub with water (or a teardrop?) hanging motionless from her eyelashes. This film has it all and it’s a shame anyone ever tried to remake it. Some things should remain sacrosanct.
